20 December 2007 Do not panic buy petrol, say officials

Drivers should not look to pick up fuel as a panic measure in the next few days, it has been claimed.

The Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reports that the director general of the UK Petroleum Industry Association Chris Hunt has told motorists to stay calm.

He says that "there's no panic, no shortage, nothing to worry about", despite forecourts in Norwich running out of gas.

Motorists who find themselves low on petrol in the middle of a busy highway may find themselves prone to an accident.

Such a collision may not be covered by car insurance companies, as they could consider not having enough fuel an act of negligence.

"At this time of the year there is an increase in demand and sometimes petrol stations forget to put in their extra order in, so you find forecourts running out," said Mr Hunt.

Meanwhile, police closed a petrol station in Cambridge this week after a methanol leak, reports the Cambridge Evening News.
