20 December 2007 Basingstoke roads monitored by new cameras
Motorists who flout the rules of the road are to be targeted by officials in Basingstoke using camera technology, it has been reported.Hampshire News states that mobile safety teams using the machinery will operate in Worting Road and Churchill Way West in an effort to cut down the dangerous behaviour.
It may be that those who pick up motoring convictions find that their car insurance policies become compromised.
This is because some cover companies may judge their antics to be indicative of a risky road user.
Local people have been lobbying for something to be done, according to Julian Hewitt, spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Safer Roads Partnership.
"Residents have asked for something to be done along these stretches of road and, after looking at the collision figures, we have set up two mobile camera safety sites," he said.
On December 1st, the Department for Transport launched its annual campaign to curb drink-driving over the festive period, targeting 17 to 29-year-old males.
