20 December 2007 Jail threat for drivers using mobiles

Using a phone on the road could lands drivers in jail. Motorists who use their mobile phones behind the wheel may be punished for the crime with a jail term, it has been reported.

The Crown Prosecution Service has today issued new rules outlining the definition of a new death by careless driving offence and fiddling with equipment while on the road is a major part of it.

Currently, the offence results in drivers picking up a three-point licence penalty and fine, which can have an effect on car insurance policies if cover firms consider the person involved a road risk.

But if a fatal accident occurs when a motorist is on their phone they could face 14 years in jail, while a manslaughter charge could see them get a life term.

The Department for Transport increased the sanctions for motorists caught out to a £60 fine and licence point penalty on February 27th this year.
