19 December 2007 North-west drivers warned over fuel

Don't be caught out this Christmas. A new campaign has been launched in order to cut the number of people caught without fuel this Christmas, it has been reported.

The Blackpool Gazette reports that the Highways Agency initiative will last three weeks and stretch across Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Merseyside and Greater Manchester roads.

Running out of petrol while driving can pose a number of safety risks for motorists, including accidents which can have an effect on car insurance policies in the region.

Indeed, Highways Agency figures show that 10,225 such breakdowns had occurred nationwide by the end of October this year, with 2,333 reported in the north-west.

Early this year, a petrol contamination crisis hit motorists in the south of England.

As a result, Tesco issued a double-page apology in national newspapers, telling drivers that they would be happy to pay for any repairs to damage done by the faulty fuel.
