18 December 2007 Mobile phone clampdown targets motorists

It is illegal to use a handheld phone behind the wheel. Yorkshire police officers are to set their sights on the rogue road users in the region who continue to use their mobile phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.

According to York Press, City of York Council's road safety officer Tom Foxton believes there is still a large amount of motorists taking to the road in such a manner.

He said: "Additional enforcement of the mobile phone legislation will be taking part alongside our Christmas drink-drive campaign this month."

Being found by officials on a handheld device at the wheel can result in a £60 and a three-point driving licence penalty in accordance with new Department for Transport legislation brought in on February 27th this year.

It can also see drivers pick up a motoring conviction which can damage a car insurance policy.

The official stated that 81 per cent of people on the road were aware of the punishment they can receive, so there is no excuse for being caught out this Christmas.
