18 December 2007 First week of festive crackdown nets 200

Drink-drivers are being cracked down on nationwide. The first seven days of a clampdown on motorists in Scotland who drink and drive has seen close to 200 people caught out by police, it has been reported.

According to the Glasgow Evening Times, the 199 people pulled over by officers is a figure down on the 209 motorists arrested over the same period last year.

It could now be that those punished with a motoring conviction face difficulty taking out a car insurance policy in the future, as some cover firms view poor road history as indicative of bad driving.

"The warnings could not be clearer; take the risk of getting behind the wheel after consuming excess alcohol or drugs and the chances are you will be caught," commented chief constable John Vine, chairman of the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Official government statistics show that an average of 3,000 serious collisions are recorded each year due to drink-driving.
