17 December 2007 Police report fewer drink-driving incidents
The number of people caught drink-driving on both sides of the Irish border has dropped since a campaign against the act began earlier this month, it has been reported.According to the BBC, 182 motorists have been found on the wrong side of the law from early December – 35 fewer than the amount from the same time in 2006.
Indeed, there has been a 16 per cent drop in the number of motorists breaking the law over the time period.
This may mean that fewer people will be paying extra for their car insurance policies, as those with motoring convictions often end up paying more as cover companies view them as an increased risk.
Acting chief inspector Rosie Leech commented that there would be no let up in the fight against the crime.
The Department for Transport states that there is an average of 3,000 serious road collisions each year caused by drink-driving.
