13 December 2007 Rogue motorists given lesson in road safety
Drivers stopped by police for a variety of reasons were given a crash course in road safety as part of a police initiative, it has been reported.Knutsford officers took part in the scheme and accosted motorists mostly for speeding, although some van drivers were caught without their seatbelts, This Is Cheshire reports.
Once the offenders were pulled over, they were shown car wreckage and a DVD about the dangers of drink-driving, it added.
It may be that motorists who pick up convictions have difficulty taking out van insurance in the future, as some cover companies could view such activity as a risk to other road users.
"This was all to do with education, not enforcement ... I got the impression the majority of drivers thought it was a good idea," said Sergeant Jim Bolton.
Department for Transport statistics show that 3,150 people were killed on UK roads last year.
