12 December 2007 Speeders kill ponies
The speeding habits of motorists in Devon have resulted in the deaths of five ponies in the region over the last eight weeks, it has been reported.According to the BBC, the B3212 between Princetown and Yelverton is a hot spot for those breaking the limit, with one vehicle clocked at 127 mph recently.
Speeding can be life-threatening and may also affect car insurance policies if drivers pick up a conviction.
This is because some cover companies could consider the act indicative of a dangerous road user.
"More animals will suffer if motorists don't reduce their speed ... If they do hit an animal while driving they must contact the police immediately," commented Maureen Rolls from the South West Equine Protection Society.
Earlier this month, the Mid Devon Star reported that a police initiative - Operation Vortex - caught out around 425 people travelling over the speed limit over the course of November.
