11 December 2007 Drivers 'are ignoring road signs'

Drivers have been ignoring road signs in Wiltshire. A large amount of motorists have been ignoring a road sign erected in the aftermath of a serious traffic collision, it has been reported.

The Gazette & Herald states that police officers in Swindon are frustrated by drivers disregarding the placard which states that Stone Lane in Lydiard Millicent is closed.

People involved in an accident because of this may find it difficult to claim on their car insurance policies, as they will essentially be at fault.

According to police constable David Cooper from the Central Roads Policing Unit, the act is carried out a lot and carries a large danger.

He said: "This is a common occurrence at collision scenes and these drivers are putting themselves and members of the emergency services at risk."

Meanwhile, Devon county council will not be introducing multi-lingual signs to help out foreign drivers, surmising that the cost would be too great, Road Transport reports.
