11 December 2007 Drivers may be 'offered fast lane alternative'
Motorists in the UK could soon be offered the chance to pay for the privilege of overtaking slow traffic, it has been reported. The Highways Agency is considering widening the road or making the hard shoulder available for those who pay an extra toll.
However, it may not be an option for all motorists, as some may not have the extra cash after paying for car insurance and road tax bills.
Drivers on the road would be policed using automatic number plate recognition technology, making sure the right people are using the route.
But drivers who carry passengers may be allowed to use the toll lane for free, as they are effectively reducing both congestion and carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, the Highways Agency last week began a public consultation which could see traffic officers given the power to remove abandoned vehicles from motorways and A roads.
