10 December 2007 32 motorists 'clocked over 100 mph'

Rogue drivers were caught out in police campaign. Police in Devon and Cornwall found 32 drivers travelling at more than 100 mph as part of a traffic campaign, it has been reported.

The Mid Devon Star states that the constabulary's Operation Vortex programme caught a total of 425 people over the speed limit throughout November.

Such an offence can result in people invalidating their car insurance policies as cover firms may consider them to be more of a risk on the road.

Inspector Richard Pryce from the force's roads policing unit commented that the number of motorists breaking the law was "unacceptable".

"It is clear from Operation Vortex that some motorists continue to adopt a complacent and even arrogant approach to road safety," he said.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were some 3,150 people killed on roads in the UK over the course of 2006.

In 2005, 3,201 fatalities were recorded by the group.
