10 December 2007 Motorists slowed by northern snowstorms

Motorists faced wintry conditions this weekend. Drivers in the north of England found themselves struggling to control their cars as snowstorms hit the area, it has been reported.

According to the Sunday Sun, motorists in Northumberland and County Durham experienced slippery surfaces on the A68 close to the Scottish border.

Collisions in such conditions can be dangerous and compromise a car insurance policy if a cover company considers the driver involved enough of a risk.

A representative of Northumbria police commented that warnings were made to drivers in the area.

"We advised motorists not to make any journeys on the A68 at Carter Bar and the rest of the road was also treacherous," said a spokesman for the force.

The Highways Agency this weekend advised drivers in the south-west to stay safe after severe winds were forecast by the Met Office.

Warnings of gales up to 80 mph were predicted by the group.
