06 December 2007 One in four road deaths 'is work-related'

A number of highways fatalities 'occur at work'. A quarter of deaths recorded on the road involve a driver who is working at the time, according to new research.

Road safety organisation Brake has cited Department for Transport figures which show that 6,662 people were seriously injured in crashes at work last year, while 858 were killed.

This may cause car insurance companies to increase the cost of polices for employers, as they could consider the risks of occupational driving a good reason to hike up prices.

Jools Townsend, head of education at Brake, commented that the number of people dying on the road at work is "shocking".

"We're urging businesses to wake up to the need to manage and reduce risks faced by employees driving for work," she said.

Meanwhile, the South Yorkshire Times reports that close to 11,000 people have signed a Brake petition in favour of increasing the sentences for hit-and-run drivers.
