05 December 2007 Tinted windows 'could result in fines'

Police are on the lookout for cars with tinted windows. Drivers have been warned that they can be fined if their tinted windows are judged to be a problem on the road, it has been reported.

The Northampton Chronicle states that officers have reminded motorists that they are allowed to make their windscreens darker by 25 per cent and their front windows by 30 per cent.

A conviction for breaking the law could result in people invalidating their car insurance policies, as cover firms may consider them to be a risk on the road.

Rowley Adams, police constable at the Northamptonshire force, outlined the ways in which motorists can be punished.

He told the news source: "We can deal with it in two ways. Either the owner will be given 14 days to remove the tint or will be given a fixed penalty notice with a £30 fine."

Earlier this year, the Department for Transport increased the penalty for being caught on a mobile phone behind the wheel to a £60 fine and a three-point licence sanction.
