04 December 2007 System exposes UK's 'inadequate roads'

Roads are 'inadequate' in the UK A number of roads in the UK have not rated highly on a new scale devised by a motoring body.

Nearly half of the A-roads in Britain picked up two stars only as part of the research by IAM Trust.

Furthermore, the system judged that just over one in ten (11 per cent) could be awarded four stars by the company.

Those looking to keep the cost of their motor insurance policies down may find that they have to battle against the highways in addition to staying aware of other drivers.

"While errors cannot be eliminated and may be the initial cause of a collision, poor design of the road itself is often the killer," said Neil Greig, IAM Trust director.

Meanwhile, figures from the Department for Transport show that there were some 3,150 people killed on UK highways last year, compared to 3,201 in 2005.
