28 November 2007 Footballers set road safety example

Young drivers can take extra lessons. Young drivers in Durham may want to follow the lead of local footballers who have taken part in advanced driving lessons.

Players from Sunderland AFC's youth team are tackling their inexperience on the road with classes on rear-end shunts, losing control and overtaking.

Such incidents are thought to be among the main causes of accidents, with motorists between 17 and 25 involved in 80 per cent of the region's collisions.

As a result, it may be that car insurance policies for those within the demographic are compromised.

"Through this scheme, we intend to give young people the skills and know-how to enable them to drive in a safe and responsible manner every time they get behind the wheel," said Alan Kennedy, road safety section manager for Durham county council.

Over the weekend, Sunderland's senior team crashed to a 7-1 defeat to Everton in the Premiership.
