27 November 2007 Vehicle thieves 'invited in by drivers'
Motorists could be encouraging vehicle theft by leaving items of worth out on display in their automobiles, according to a Lancashire news source. The Northwich Guardian has reported that police in the region believe people may be inviting opportunistic criminals each time they leave their car with something valuable in plain sight.
"Preventing this type of crime only takes a few seconds and a bit of common sense," Community Support Officer Simon Martindale stated.
If motorists are to leave their vehicles for a long period of time, they should make sure that nothing of value can be seen from the outside, authorities added.
Doing so could also see people save on their car insurance policies in the future, as they are likely to be making fewer claims against theft.
Meanwhile, statistics from the Home Office have shown that a 51 per cent fall in vehicle crime has been recorded since 1997.
The body added that there have been 1.7 million thefts over the course of 2005 and 2006.
