21 November 2007 Electronic insurance certificates 'a step in right direction'
The introduction of the electronic storage of drivers' motor insurance details would be a good thing, according to an industry expert.A proposal outlined by road safety minister John Fitzpatrick would see police receive a motorist's cover details on request via email.
Such a move would reduce the number of people caught out for not having the appropriate documents with them during police checks, commented Insurancewide.com chief executive James Harrison.
"The arrival of electronic motor insurance certificates will allow drivers to have access to their motor insurance documents almost immediately and will reduce the risk of drivers being wrongly perceived as uninsured," said the expert.
As a result, the number of cars confiscated and fines received by motorists could fall, he added.
European Union officials are looking to introduce new legislation making it easier for consumers to switch between car insurance companies, according to Reuters.
