21 November 2007 Mobile phone crackdown on Merseyside motorists

Merseyside police have issued a phone warning Police in Merseyside are looking to catch out drivers in the region who continue to flout the law by using a mobile phone behind the wheel, according to a local news source.

The Wirral Globe has commented that the initiative, which began last month, has already resulted in 260 fixed-penalty notices issued and ten arrests for a variety of offences.

Any run-in with the law can result in a car insurance policy being compromised, particularly as cover companies often base the deals they offer on recent road history.

"The operational activity is aimed at reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on Wirral's roads," stated Sergeant Duncan Swan.

Department for Transport officials introduced new legislation regarding the use of mobile phones behind the wheel earlier this year.

Motorists can now pick up a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty for the crime.
