21 November 2007 Bucks drivers 'risk lives' by skipping red lights
Motorists in Buckinghamshire who flout the law by skipping red lights are risking lives, a road safety official has claimed.Inspector Steve Betts, British Transport Police sector commander, commented that the consequences of such an act can be "tragic", according to the Bucks Free Press.
It may be that those involved in a collision also risk their car insurance policies, as cover firms are often reluctant to renew the deals of those with a recent history of poor road use.
The news source stated that such behaviour has become a particular problem at a level crossing in Bourne End.
"Safety procedures are in place for a reason," said the official.
He added: "All we ask is that [drivers] think before [they] act."
This comes as figures from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 road deaths on highways in the UK last year.
