20 November 2007 Increase in crashes involving non-UK drivers

Foreign drivers 'need to be more aware' of UK roads The number of crashes involving people from overseas driving in the UK has increased over the last five years, it has been claimed.

According to research from the Association of British Insurers, 47 per cent more incidents involving foreign motorists have taken place over the period.

This has caused Drive & Survive head of training Mark Edwards to comment that those entering Britain "clearly need to understand [its] rules of the road".

Indeed, if foreign drivers were to brush up on their awareness, it may also reduce the number of car and van insurance claims being made.

"They may well be legally entitled to use our roads but too many foreign drivers are just not well prepared enough when it comes to understanding signs, road markings, restrictions and speed limits," he said.

Drive & Survive picked up the Best Risk Management Company prize at this year's Fleet News Awards.
