16 November 2007 Police urged Lancashire drivers to keep valuables hidden

Keep valuables out of sight, say police. Motorists in Lancashire have been told to make sure they do not leave their cars with expensive items on display, it has been reported.

According to the Lancashire Evening Post, officers have distributed more than 1,400 notices to drivers in the area reminding them of this.

Such action has been taken in order to reduce the instances of vehicle-related thefts in the region, commented Inspector June Chessel of Fulwood Police.

But it may also help people save on their car insurance policies, as a break-in can result in an increased bill if cover companies consider the driver involved to be a risk.

"Analysis of crime over the last year highlights to us that vehicles that are left unattended with property on display are much more likely to get broken into," she said.

This comes as statistics from the Home Office show that vehicle-related crime has dropped 51 per cent since 1997.
