14 November 2007 Dorset drivers 'using their phones on the road'

Officials in Dorset are cracking down on motorists on phones Dorset motorists are taking calls and using their mobile phones to text people with increasing regularity behind the wheel, it has been reported.

This comes despite new regulation introduced in February this year under which drivers can pick up a £60 fine in addition to a three-point licence penalty for flouting the law in this way.

Since then, the Dorset Echo states that the constabulary has issued 1,511 tickets, which could prove costly for those looking to keep car insurance prices down.

This is because cover companies often base the cost of the policies they offer on the past convictions of drivers on the road.

Scott Oliphant from the constabulary commented that authorities have taken a strong stance against the act.

He said: "I think part of that increase is the fact the level of enforcement by officers in Dorset Police has been increased to reflect the seriousness of the offence, and to reflect the consequences of an accident occurring."
