13 November 2007 Dorset motorists 'slow down when they see ducks'

Ducks have been used to curb speeding drivers! The latest tool in the fight against dangerous road behaviour has proven to be a flock of ducks, according to a report.

Motorists in Dorset have cut their speed due to the efforts of Ann Martin, a 63-year-old postmistress, in addition to what must be Britain's first winged traffic officers.

Drivers were spotted by Ms Martin dropping their speed on sight of the ducks, so she decided to train them to appear at roadsides during typically busy times, the report added.

As a result, motorists may find that they have the ducks to thank for keeping their car insurance policy prices down, as firms rarely offer cheap deals to those with speeding convictions.

"'It's true, the ducks and geese slow down the cars. The geese sometimes stop in the middle of the road. That certainly puts a stop to the rush," said local councillor Tommy Bartlett.

Meanwhile, the discovery of a faulty speed camera in Dorset may see drivers refunded up to £3 million in speeding fines.
