13 November 2007 Schoolchildren lend hand in fight against speeders

Children have been helping the police catch speeders Police in Yorkshire have a new weapon when it comes to reducing the number of accidents caused by speeding - schoolchildren.

Members of Holy Trinity Primary School in Yorkshire joined officers in clocking speeds and taking down the details of motorists flouting the law, according the Halifax Courier.

As a result, it may be that the drivers pick up a motoring conviction and have difficulty with their car insurance policies as cover companies are often reluctant to give a cheap deal to a driver with a bad history on the road.

Elizabeth McCann, deputy headteacher at the school, commented on the significance of the scheme.

She said: "Every day 17 children under six are injured on the roads and at least one child in this age range dies every two weeks."

Last month, children at Katherine's School in Essex helped their local police force record and track drivers found to be breaking the speed limit.
