13 November 2007 Safety official: We welcome new proposals
A police officer has claimed that proposed changes to road safety regulation would be welcomed across the force.According to the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, Northamptonshire Police Constable Stephen Harris commented that policeman would accommodate any new rule designed to bring down driver deaths.
"We welcome any proposal that would encourage road users to take more care and drive at an appropriate speed, but we must also bear in mind that speed is only one of the factors," he said.
This comes as authorities have announced plans to introduce a six-point penalty for habitual speeders, along with a one-year ban for motorists who pick up 12 points within 12 months.
A motoring conviction can also have an effect on a car insurance policy, as cover firms may be reluctant to offer cheaper deals to those with a history of bad driving.
New rules could reduce the number of deaths on UK roads each year. In 2006, 3,150 fatalities were recorded.
