12 November 2007 Mobile reminder issued by council

Drivers are being reminded not to phone and drive Authorities in Peterborough have taken the step of reminding motorists not to use their mobile phones behind the wheel, according to a local news source.

Peterborough Today has reports that officials in the region have stated that the devices are useful in the event of an emergency, but still pose a significant threat.

Department for Transport legislation from earlier this year means that motorists can now pick up a £60 fine in addition to three points on their licence should they be caught out.

Furthermore, they could also receive a more expensive car insurance policy, as cover companies may consider them to be less proficient on the road.

"Tests have shown that a driver cannot help being distracted by a phone call or text message. If they are distracted they will not register hazards or react quickly," commented council road safety officer Clair George.
