12 November 2007 Motorists who smoke behind wheel 'face crackdown'

Motorists warned not to smoke and drive People who smoke while driving in Liverpool have been made the target of a new police campaign, according to a local news source.

The Liverpool Daily Post has reported authorities in the city will be looking to catch out all those who light up behind the wheel.

However, pro-smoking group Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco (Forest) stated that the move is one "too far".

It commented: "The police should only stop and prosecute motorists if there is genuine worry and fear about the state of their driving – not if they are lighting a cigarette."

Motorists who pick up a conviction for lighting up behind the wheel may also find they have difficulty taking out car insurance policies in the future.

This is because a number of cover companies could consider them to be hazardous on the road.

Authorities outlawed smoking in publicly enclosed spaces on July 1st 2007.
