07 November 2007 New Saab system keeps track of sleepy motorists
Drivers who are sleepy behind the wheel will be given assistance from a new system by automaker Saab. The firm has developed a new Driver Attention Warning System in order to cut down what it sees as two of the road's biggest problems: drowsiness and inattention behind the wheel.
Messages are emitted through a vehicle's audio device, telling the motorist "You are tired" and "You are dangerously tired - stop as soon as it is safe to do so".
The latter warning can only be stopped once a driver has removed the system's fascia and pressed a reset button.
Such technology may help motorists keep their car insurance no-claims policies in tact.
Arne Nabo, head of the Human Vehicle Integration team, said: "We are now trying to help drivers to help themselves."
Earlier this year, a German lorry driver was charged with killing four people due to falling asleep behind the wheel.
