06 November 2007 Littering on Northumberland roads 'a problem'
The amount of litter on roads across Northumberland is becoming a problem, a local news source has reported.According to the Morpeth Herald, the local council has stated that 90 per cent of the rubbish on highways in the region is down to motorists who eat and drink behind the wheel.
It added that tidying up the mess is becoming an expensive job for authorities, with Castle Morpeth Borough Council's Green and Clean manager Andy Rutherford calling the issue "horrendous".
He said: "I am sure it is not just an isolated problem in our borough, because people simply have no regard for the environment or countryside through which they are travelling."
Motorists who are involved in a collision due to rubbish on the roads may also find the resultant car insurance costs expensive.
People found to be driving erratically due to eating and drinking behind the wheel may be stopped by the police and given a £60 fine and three-point driving licence penalty.
