05 November 2007 Speed limit 'could be raised without safety issues'
The speed limit for motorways in the UK could go up without causing an increased risk to drivers, it has been claimed.According to the Association of British Drivers (ABD), authorities should not consider speeding to be a major factor in road collisions.
In this respect, it added that Britain should follow Germany's lead and have more relaxed rules on the highways.
Motorists who are regularly caught above the limit may welcome such a move as it may save them money on their car insurance policies.
Indeed, a number of cover firms are reluctant to offer a cheap deal to those who have driving convictions.
"The speed limit on UK motorways could be raised to at least 85 mph without compromising safety or CO2 emissions," said Nigel Humphries, speaking on behalf of the ABD.
Department for Transport statistics show that there were some 3,150 road deaths in the UK during 2006.
