01 November 2007 Homeowners 'should perform winter house health check'

Be careful this bonfire night People who own property in the UK should be looking to assess the condition of it as winter draws in, it has been claimed.

Research from Halifax has suggested that the season may result in a higher level of claims made on home insurance policies.

Emergency home checks to look for cracked roof tiles and dodgy drains "need to be carried out", commented company spokesperson Vicky Emmott.

In doing so, people may find that they save money which could be used to pay for extras over the Christmas period.

"With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than the cure, and many claims could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the coming bad weather," said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, MoneyExpert.com has found that there were some 1.6 million more home and car insurance policies switched during the third quarter of 2007 compared to the second.
