Aberdeenshire drivers may soon be driving on highways without white lines, as it is believed that the change will see them cut their speed.

Neil Greig at the Institute of Advanced Motorists commented: "The theory is if you create uncertainty in the mind of the driver they will slow down, back off, look around and proceed more safely."

The method - known as psychological traffic calming - impacted positively in Wiltshire when it was trialled there earlier this year.

Indeed, motorists may find that it also benefits them when it comes to car insurance if they end up making fewer claims.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people were killed in collisions on UK roads over the course of 2006.
