31 October 2007 Car insurance crackdown called for by official
An MP in Wear has commented that more needs to be done to curb the prevalence of those without car insurance.Figures in the Sunderland Echo show that 11,685 people were punished for driving without cover in 2004, compared to 12,470 in 1997.
Fraser Kemp, who represents Houghton and Washington East, commented that the crime is a problem in the region and needs to stop.
He added that "an accident involving an uninsured driver is something that can happen to any of us".
Indeed, a collision with a motorist without cover could result in a large repair bill for an innocent party.
"These figures show the scale of the problem here in our region and that is why I shall be meeting with the minister to press the case for tougher action against offenders," Mr Kemp commented.
This comes as the government has told car insurance companies to register driver policy details on the Motor Insurance Database within seven days of purchase from 2008.
