31 October 2007 Drivers 'are still flouting phone laws'
The rules against using a mobile phone behind the wheel are not being picked up by motorists in the UK, it has been claimed.According to website BetterDrivingPlease.com - a domain which allows people to flag up any poor road use they witness - there have been more than 1,100 instances of people behaving illegally in this respect since January.
Portal founder Andrew McGavin commented that authorities need to do more in order to make sure the law is not being overlooked by motorists.
"We seem to tolerate drivers focusing more on their phone call than the road. This has to be tackled and it is the police's job to act," he said.
New legislation against the act brought in earlier this year means that those caught out can pick up three licence points in addition to a £60 fine.
Such a conviction may also prove problematic for those looking to take out a car insurance policy, as cover companies may consider them a risk on the road.
