30 October 2007 Number of uninsured drivers on the increase
The number of uninsured drivers on Britain's roads increased by 100,000 in one year and has now reached a total of 2.1 million vehicles, it has emerged.Lynne Featherstone of the Liberal Democrats has accused the government of insufficient activity in tackling the problem.
She commented that uninsured drivers are left with the bill, paying £30 more on average for car insurance premiums because of the activity of uninsured drivers.
"Their policies for pursuing uninsured drivers have been a total failure and it is about time they accepted the facts and took action," Ms Featherstone added.
Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick has responded by noting that no long-term evidence on car insurance trends exist and noted that insurance industry figures indicated a 4.2 per cent decline in claims involving uninsured drivers in 2006.
In August 2007, Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Susan Kramer announced on the party's website that one in five uninsured drivers were currently being caught and fined.
