29 October 2007 Police get tough on phone-using drivers

Using a phone behind the wheel could be dangerous. Motorists using their mobile phones while on the road have been the target of a police operation in Essex.

The constabulary issued five tickets to drivers caught using the devices at the wheel earlier this week, with 46 given to people who were not wearing their seatbelts in vehicles.

As a result of the penalties, it may be that these motorists face larger car insurance costs in the future as some cover companies may see them as a risk once they have a conviction.

Epping Forest District Commander Ivor Harvey disclosed his anguish at the result of the crackdown.

The official said: "It is disappointing to see so many people break the law and place other road users and pedestrians in danger."

Earlier this month, Central Scotland Police Chief Inspector Donald McMillan described the actions of a driver clocked speeding at 122 mph last weekend as "simply horrendous".
