26 October 2007 RoSPA: Clock change would save lives

The clocks go back on Saturday A top safety body has told drivers using the road as the clocks go back this weekend to take care.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has stated that accident rates typically go up once the time is changed.

A shift in the system, bringing the UK one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, would mean that the winter nights stay lighter for longer, the group added.

Indeed, such a move could mean that motorists in the UK are involved in fewer accidents and see them save on their car insurance policies as a result.

"Studies have shown that 450 lives and serious injuries could be saved each year if we stayed one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in the winter and two hours ahead in the summer," said Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety.

Official government figures show that there were some 3,150 road deaths in the UK last year.
