24 October 2007 Rogue drivers in Grampian "allowed off the hook"

Motorists from other lands may be punished less. Motorists in one region of Scotland have been allowed to get away with speeding crimes because of where they are from, it has been claimed.

According to the Press and Journal, some 976 drivers were caught out by Grampian Police over the last two years but escaped punishment as they were in vehicles registered outside of the UK.

This could prove problematic if the same people are involved in accidents with UK motorists and need to make a car insurance claim.

Christine Grahame of the Scottish National Party stated that authorities need to step in and resolve the situation.

She said: "Steps should be taken by the DVLA and other relevant authorities to pursue all speeding drivers, regardless of where they come from, to ensure they are penalised and deterred from placing the lives of others at risk."

Grampian Police are currently investigating the death of a 19-year-old man killed while walking along the B9301 Fraserburgh to Rosehearty last weekend, the same news source has reported.
