23 October 2007 Motorists 'may suffer due to tyre over-inflation'

October is national tyre safety month Drivers whose tyres are inflated past the appropriate level may be risking accidents on the road, it has been claimed.

TyreSafe has stated that there is a "significant" amount of motorists who are carrying over-inflated wheels, adding that three in four cars on the road have a tyre that is not inflated enough.

As a result, it may be that those driving with insufficient pressure are more likely to crash on the road, which could cause car insurance companies to hike up their polices if they feel the driver is a risk.

But TyreSafe is looking to help by teaming up with vehicle manufacturers at sites around the country.

"Motorists can have free tyre safety and pressure checks at participating tyre retailers or VW or Kia dealerships. For further information and tyre safety advice and leaflets log on to the TyreSafe website," said the firm.

Previously known as the Tyre Industry Council, the organisation is run on a non-profit basis.
