22 October 2007 Work begins on Britain's first car pool lane
The Highways Agency (HA) has announced that the first High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in the UK has gone into production.A HOV, or carpool lane, is an exclusive stretch of road set aside for motorists carrying passengers, reducing congestion and the strain on the environment.
Now Britain will receive its own, with the £3.95 million pilot scheme getting underway, switching the 1.7 mile road between the southbound M606 near Bradford and M62 close to Leeds to an HOV.
Motorists may find that the new scheme sees drivers save money, particularly if those being carried pay towards petrol costs.
Any extra money is always a help, especially when large car insurance bills need to be paid.
"Car sharing is good for drivers and good for the environment. This trial in West Yorkshire is just one of a series of innovative and imaginative measures," said transport minister Tom Harris.
This comes as the HA has warned motorists in Yorkshire and the Humber that delays should be expected due to roadworks on the A1 at junction 34.
