19 October 2007 Break-ins lead to police warning for van drivers
Van drivers in one area of Lancashire have been warned that they need to hide valuables and securely lock their vehicles if they are to avoid being made the target of thieves, it has been reported.Pendle Today stated that three vans outside a Burnley hotel were damaged over the weekend, as opportunistic criminals looked to take advantage of negligent motorists.
A break-in can result in people paying out more for their van insurance in future, as cover companies may view owners who have a poor history to be significant risks.
"They took their sat navs into the hotel so they weren't left in the vehicles overnight, which is what we advise people to do. But opportunists will try their luck if they see a cradle, or even the sucker marks left on the glass," said Sergeant John Fryer of Colne Police.
Statistics from the Home Office show that there were around 1.7 million car crime incidents in the UK over 2005 and 2006.
