18 October 2007 Higher motoring age 'could cut young driver deaths'

Higher driving age may be introduced Officials may look to curb the number of young driver fatalities on British roads by increasing the age at which it becomes legal to drive.

The transport department may consider upping the limit to 18 in an effort reduce accident rates.

Such action is necessary if the risks on UK highways are to be correctly addressed, commented committee chair Gwyneth Dunwoody.

"Novice drivers are extremely vulnerable and pose considerable risks to their passengers and other road users. Our report recommends a wholesale reform of the driver licensing regulations," the official added.

If age is a factor in cover companies drawing up car insurance policies, it may be that motorists find their deals become cheaper if this ruling comes into effect.

Research from road safety charity Brake shows that 13 per cent of full licence holders in the UK are under the age of 25.

However, it added that 29 per cent of road deaths involve motorists in the demographic.
