17 October 2007 Passengers smoking 'most annoying trait'
Smoking has been singled out as the most annoying habit a passenger can indulge in, according to drivers in a new study.Craigslist commissioned YouGov to do the research, in which it found that the majority of motorists felt lighting up was a step too far for those in their vehicles.
The company added that talking loudly on a mobile phone was also impolite, as was listening to a personal mp3 player.
It may be that a driver putting up with such annoyances risks their car insurance policy if they cannot fully concentrate on the road.
According to Craigslist chief executive Jim Buckmaster, people sharing vehicles should try to get along.
"We urge those considering it to try and find out first whether their prospective fellow passengers are likely to prove compatible," he said.
The 2007 revision of the Highway Code states that motorists may be prosecuted if they are found to be smoking behind the wheel of their cars.
