16 October 2007 Agency teams up with YouTube over road safety
The Highways Agency (HA) is to use YouTube as part of its latest attempt to reduce the number of young driver road collisions.Until the end of the year, HA messages will be broadcast on the domain, in addition to ITV digital services across the UK.
It may be that the message gets through to the young drivers who frequent the popular video-sharing site, possibly bringing down their car insurance costs in the process.
Some 44 people aged between 16 and 25 have been killed in the Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway area alone over the last three years, cause enough for the body to turn to technology to raise awareness.
"Using media which young people rely on themselves to communicate has got to be a good way to get these key safety messages across," remarked Bob Baldwin, area performance manager for the HA in Cumbria and North Lancashire.
This comes as the body has rolled out digital cameras and satellite tracking systems to Lancashire police officers in order to assist accident clean-up operations.
