15 October 2007 Motorists 'ignoring the risk of rural roads'
Drivers in one area of the UK are choosing not to pay attention to the risks on rural roads, it has been claimed. The New Post Leader has commented that chief fire officer at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service Brian Hesler stated that the risks on some country roads can lead to "tragic" results.
He added that his team is often called in to help remove people from damaged cars.
"Our fire crews often witness the tragic consequences of careless driving and driving too fast for the conditions on rural roads when they have to cut casualties out of the wreckage of crashed vehicles," he said.
Such an incident may also lead to motorists having to claim on their car insurance policies, or dip into their pockets to avoid compromising a no-claims bonus.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is another dangerous road trait.
According to the Department for Transport, there is an average of 3,000 such incidents each year.
