15 October 2007 Drivers receive fresh calls against using phones
A police officer has claimed that some motorists are playing with their lives by continuing to use phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.Inspector Joy Mayhew from the Bury St Edmunds constabulary has commented that some people must think ringing mobiles are "more important than their lives", according to the East Anglian Daily Times.
The news source added that the force had issued 34 fixed penalty notices against drivers breaking the law in this manner over August.
It may be that they risk their car insurance policies in addition to their lives, as some cover companies may increase premium prices if a motorist has a prior conviction.
"It can take just a split second for someone to look down at a screen, look back up and find they are in the back of a lorry. That is all it takes to kill someone," said Inspector Mayhew.
From February 27th this year, a £60 fine and a three-point licence penalty is the punishment for being caught on the phone while behind the wheel.
