09 October 2007 Drink-drive limit reassessment called for by RoSPA

The drink-drive limit needs to be reviewed, says RoSPA The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has said it believes the UK's drink-driving limit should be revaluated.

Coming as the breathalyser celebrates its 40th year in use, the road safety body has stated that the legal amount should be reviewed in order to save lives in the future.

In addition, a motorist's car insurance policy can become compromised in the event a person has an accident or is found to be under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety, commented that reducing the level would "save around 65 lives and 230 serious injuries" in the UK annually.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were some 3,150 deaths on roads in Britain in 2006.

This is down from the previous year, when some 3,201 people were killed on highways across the nation.
