09 October 2007 British motorists 'happy to turn green'

British drivers happy to go green A large proportion of drivers in Britain would be happy to expand their green credentials in the future, new research has found.

There are 17.7 million people nationwide who would exchange their car for one which is ecologically sound, according to research from EDF Energy.

Some cover companies even reward motorists for becoming green, with discounts on their car insurance policies.

But the research also shows how unaware people are over environmental issues.

Some 600,000 people revealed they believe electric cars can be energised via mobile phone chargers, while 17 per cent of respondents claimed they run on petrol.

"Drivers are increasingly demanding transport options that don't have such a detrimental effect on the world we live in," commented head of innovation and partnerships at the firm Peter Thorn.

This comes as British car manufacturer Land Rover has stated it will have cut carbon emissions by 20 per cent in 2012.
